Anxiety

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural response to stress, and it can affect people of all ages and backgrounds. It is a feeling of unease, such as fear or worry, that can range from mild to severe. Anxiety becomes a problem when it interferes with daily life and makes it difficult to carry out normal activities.

Symptoms of Anxiety

Some common physical symptoms of anxiety include increased heart rate, sweating, muscle tension, and shallow breathing. Psychological symptoms may include feelings of restlessness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and trouble sleeping.

Treatment for Anxiety

Current available treatment options for anxiety include:

  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT): A therapy that helps individuals identify negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones
  • Medication: Antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and beta-blockers are often prescribed for anxiety management
  • Mindfulness meditation: Meditation can help manage anxiety by calming the mind and body
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity may help reduce anxiety symptoms
  • Herbal supplements: Supplements like valerian root, chamomile, and passionflower have been studied for their potential to reduce anxiety symptoms.

Medical Cannabis & Anxiety

Medical cannabis is emerging as a potential therapy for anxiety disorders. Studies have shown that cannabinoids, particularly CBD, may have anxiolytic properties, making them potentially beneficial for those with anxiety disorders[1][2]. CBD has been found to interact with serotonin receptors in the brain, which plays a significant role in mood disorders, including anxiety[3].

Moreover, patient reports suggest that medical cannabis can help manage symptoms of anxiety, such as restlessness, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disruptions[4]. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology found that 47% of patients who used cannabis experienced a significant reduction in their anxiety symptoms[5]. While more research is needed to fully understand the implications and potential side effects, these findings indicate that medical cannabis could offer a promising alternative or complementary treatment for individuals with anxiety disorders.

All memberships include appointments, prescription fees and monthly delivery. Additional benefits vary depending on the membership selected.

Enhanced is best suited for patients who want a more complete level of support, including longer appointments, regular quarterly reviews, continuity with the same clinician where possible, and access to additional rewards and benefits.

Essential is best suited for experienced patients who are on consistent treatment and require less frequent clinician interaction and ongoing monitoring, while still maintaining access to safe, high-quality care. Not everyone may be eligible for Essential and the Patient Care Team will support you in choosing the most appropriate membership.
