Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurobehavioral disorder that often first appears in childhood and can persist into adulthood. It is characterised by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that can interfere with daily activities, such as work tasks, schoolwork, and social interactions.

Symptoms of ADHD

Some of the most common symptoms of ADHD include:

  • Inattention: difficulty maintaining focus, disorganisation, forgetfulness, and making careless mistakes.
  • Hyperactivity: excessive movement, restlessness, and difficulty sitting still.
  • Impulsivity: acting without thinking, interrupting others, and making hasty decisions.

Treatment for ADHD

The following treatment options are commonly used to manage ADHD symptoms, medications; stimulants are the most commonly prescribed medications for ADHD, as they can help reduce hyperactivity and improve concentration. Behavioural therapy, this type of therapy aims to change behaviour patterns and teach new skills. Adults with ADHD may benefit from cognitive-behavioural therapy, which helps them develop coping strategies and improve time management. Counselling, individual or group counselling can help people with ADHD deal with feelings of frustration, anger, and low self-esteem. It can also improve communication skills and help patients develop healthy relationships. Lifestyle Changes, making lifestyle changes such as getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and reducing stress can help manage ADHD symptoms.

Medical Cannabis & ADHD

Medical cannabis is being considered as a potential treatment option for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Evidence from case studies suggests that cannabinoids may offer relief from ADHD symptoms, such as reducing hyperactivity and improving focus and impulse control[1][2]. Moreover, products high in THC have been associated with improved symptoms in ADHD patients[3].

While research is still ongoing, some reports suggest that cannabis can increase dopamine levels, much like conventional ADHD medications. This increase in dopamine can potentially help individuals with ADHD to focus better. Although it’s essential to note that cannabis should not be used to treat ADHD in people under the age of 21, these findings indicate the potential therapeutic benefits of medical cannabis for adults with ADHD[4].
