Depression

What is depression?

Depression is a mood disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterised by persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, and difficulty concentrating or making decisions. Depression can have a significant impact on a person’s daily life, relationships, and overall well-being. It is essential to understand that depression is not simply feeling sad or down for a short period but rather a prolonged state of emotional distress.

  • Symptoms of depression
  • Common symptoms include:
  • Persistent sadness,
  • feelings of hopelessness,
  • low energy levels,
  • changes in appetite or weight,
  • difficulty sleeping,
  • loss of interest in activities,
  • trouble concentrating,
  • thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Treatment

Depression is treatable, and seeking professional help is crucial. The most effective treatment approaches often involve a combination of therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, and support from loved ones. It’s important to note that what works for one person may not work for another, so personalised care is essential.

Medical Cannabis & Depression

Medical cannabis is gaining recognition as a potential treatment for depression, with some promising results. A study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that medical cannabis can significantly reduce self-reported levels of depression, anxiety, and stress in the short term[1]. Furthermore, a review article in the Journal of Neuroscience suggests that cannabinoids, such as CBD and THC, may help regulate mood and could potentially be used in treating major depressive disorder[2].

Additionally, research conducted at Washington State University revealed that one puff of cannabis high in CBD and low in THC was optimal for reducing symptoms of depression[3]. There are also anecdotal accounts of individuals experiencing relief from depression symptoms with the use of medical cannabis[4]. While more comprehensive studies are needed to fully understand the complex relationship between cannabis and depression, these findings suggest that medical cannabis could potentially offer some benefits in managing the symptoms of depression.
