Insomnia

What is insomnia?

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterised by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing non-restorative sleep, which can lead to daytime fatigue, irritability, and impaired functioning.

Symptoms of Insomnia

Insomnia can manifest in various ways, including:

  • trouble falling asleep,
  • waking up frequently during the night,
  • waking up too early,
  • feeling tired upon waking,
  • daytime sleepiness,
  • difficulty concentrating,
  • mood disturbances.

Treatment

Treatment options may include lifestyle changes, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), sleep hygiene practices, relaxation techniques, and, in some cases, medication.

Medical Cannabis & Insomnia

Medical cannabis has been gaining attention for its potential benefits in treating insomnia. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology found that patients suffering from chronic insomnia reported significant improvements in sleep duration and quality after using medical cannabis[1]. Another study in The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that more than half of the participants reported improved sleep after using medical cannabis[2].

Moreover, a report in Medicines (Basel) concluded that cannabis flower could be an effective treatment for sleep disturbances due to its pain-relieving properties, which can contribute to better sleep[3]. Patients have also shared anecdotal accounts of their positive experiences using medical cannabis to manage their insomnia symptoms[4]. While further research is necessary to fully understand the long-term effects and the appropriate dosing, these initial findings suggest that medical cannabis could potentially offer some benefits for those struggling with sleep disorders such as insomnia.

All memberships include appointments, prescription fees and monthly delivery. Additional benefits vary depending on the membership selected.

Enhanced is best suited for patients who want a more complete level of support, including longer appointments, regular quarterly reviews, continuity with the same clinician where possible, and access to additional rewards and benefits.

Essential is best suited for experienced patients who are on consistent treatment and require less frequent clinician interaction and ongoing monitoring, while still maintaining access to safe, high-quality care. Not everyone may be eligible for Essential and the Patient Care Team will support you in choosing the most appropriate membership.
