Sleep Disorders

Sleep Disorders refer to conditions which affect the quality, timing, and amount of sleep an individual is able to get. These disorders often impact on day time productivity, stress levels, and functioning. One of the most common sleep disorders is Insomnia – a condition characterised by one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Finding it difficult to fall asleep;
  • Regularly waking up during the night;
  • Feeling tired during day;
  • Still feeling tired after waking up.

Sleep disorders are surprisingly common, with up to a quarter of people in the UK potentially experiencing Insomnia. According to a recent survey, over a third of adults in the UK struggle to get to sleep at least one night per week; almost one in five have trouble falling asleep every single night.

Insomnia and other sleep disorders are often linked to heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and depression; physical health conditions; excess consumption of stimulants (including alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine); and poor sleep habits.

Treatments for Sleep Disorders

For many people who experience sleep disorders, self-help techniques, such as keeping a healthy bedtime routine (going to bed and waking up at the same time everyday); avoiding screen time for at least an hour before bed, and exercising regularly.

In less mild cases, other treatment options may be required, including over-the-counter sleep aids, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), sleep clinic referral, and prescribed sleeping pills.

Medical Cannabis Treatment

A number of studies have assessed how cannabis derivatives could be useful for the treatment of sleep disorders. Recently, a focus has been placed on CBD, due to it’s anti-anxiety properties; one such study concluded that “CBD may hold promise for REM sleep behaviour disorder and excessive daytime sleepiness”.

Other CBMPs may be useful in tackling other causes linked to sleep disorders. For example, Chronic Pain and PTSD, among others, are conditions that are often linked to Insomnia and other sleep disorders. The Wellford Medical Clinics specialises in medical cannabis treatment for pain management. Our specialist clinicians assess every case carefully to provide relevant and meaningful advice and treatment.
